New Delhi:- In a recent incident, a 16-year-old boy died after taking a protein drink to build muscle. London resident Rohan Godania fell ill after eating a protein shake. He suffered irreversible brain damage. After the incident, British officials said protein drinks should come with health warnings.
Protein is an essential macronutrient. People who want to gain muscle mass often drink protein drinks on a regular basis. However, the body needs a certain amount of protein for various functions. Many people rely on protein drinks, shakes, and powders to meet their daily needs. However, some natural protein sources are available.
“Protein powders are not completely natural proteins. They are powdered protein sources such as soy, peas, rice, eggs, milk, etc., but are free of sugars, artificial flavors, thickeners, vitamins, minerals, etc. It contains artificial ingredients," says Dr. Tayal said. The protein content also varies between 10g and 25g per scoop.

Dr. Tayal explained that adults need about 0.8g of protein per kilogram of body weight each day. However, consuming more than the recommended dietary intake puts extra strain on the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure and kidney stones. Additionally, some people have allergic reactions to certain ingredients. He also gave an example that soy-based supplements contain high levels of phytoestrogens that can disrupt the body's hormonal balance. It can also cause hair loss and acne.
“There are no specific age guidelines for taking protein supplements. However, there are many commercial dietary supplements that are high in sugar and synthetic additives, especially aimed at young people. It can lead to necessary weight gain, diabetes, and hormonal problems," she replied. Tayal.
