Amritsar: Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) Amritsar on January 6, 2022 (Thursday) remembered indira gandhi's killers and paid homage to them. Tributes were paid to those who killed Indira Gandhi at Gurudwara Jhanda Bunga in Darbar Sahib complex. During this period, he was remembered as a martyr. Their families were also felicitated. In 1989, on the 6th of January, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were hanged in Tihar Jail in Delhi.
SGPC Amritsar tweeted about the same. The tweet called it a historic event. The tweet reads, "On a historic day, martyred brother Satwant Singh and brother Kehar Singh were hanged. The bodies of the martyrs were cremated inside delhi jail after the hanging and curfew was imposed across Punjab. Satwant Singh's brother Warayan Singh was also present at the tribute meeting. Warayan Singh was also felicitated along with others. He was honoured with a cloak. The honour was conferred on Warayan Singh by Giani Gurminder Singh, SGPC member Manjit Singh and lawyer Bhagwant Singh Sialka. In memory of both of them, prayers were offered by Prem Singh and Giani Gurminder Singh recited the holy decree.
This is not the first time that former PM Indira Gandhi's killers have been honoured by SGPC. The event is held on 6th January every year. According to many media reports, it has been like an annual tradition. It started in 2012, which is still continuing. On October 31, 2021, SGPC also paid homage to Beant Singh.
