Kolkata: Prasun Banerjee, Trinamool Congress's candidate for the Malda North Lok Sabha seat, stirred controversy with his remarks cautioning central forces and the Election Commission against any acts of intimidation during elections.

Speaking at a rally in Malda, Banerjee, a former IPS officer, stated, "I urge all BSF and paramilitary forces to adhere to the law. We will also abide by the law. Let the elections be conducted freely and fairly. If paramilitary forces attempt to intimidate, 'main hoon na' (I am here)."

Banerjee emphasized the importance of treating Election Commission officials with respect. He suggested that they should be provided with appropriate facilities and not be ignored.

In a somewhat threatening tone, he asserted, "Just inform that Prasun Banerjee is here to mediate. There is no need for boots or AK-47s. Simply let them know that I am called and I will arrive within half an hour. I will educate everyone on the laws. The observer will comprehend everything."

Concluding his speech, he exclaimed, 'khela hobe' (the game is on).

Banerjee is among the 42 Lok Sabha candidates nominated by the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.

BJP Responds

Amit Malviya, head of the BJP IT cell, shared a video of Banerjee's comments regarding paramilitary forces and the Election Commission.

"Prasun, who resigned from the IPS and joined the Trinamool Congress the very next day to contest Lok Sabha elections, is now issuing warnings to the Election Commission of India. One can only imagine his actions as a police officer! He epitomizes all that is wrong with the West Bengal Police," Malviya wrote on X.

Earlier this month, Banerjee opted for voluntary retirement from the IPS. He served as the Inspector General of Police for the Raiganj Range.

In addition to his political career, Banerjee is also a well-known theatre actor in the state.
