Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) members on Saturday protested against rising fuel prices across West Bengal. The skyrocketing oil prices in the Corona period have broken the back of the general public. In West Bengal, petrol is being sold at Rs.101 per litre while diesel is selling beyond Rs.92 per litre. The price of LPG cylinder has gone up to Rs 861.

Protests were also held in Dum Dum, Central Avenue and Chetla area of Kolkata, Canning in South 24 Parganas, Chinsurah and Malda in Hooghly besides other parts of the state to protest against the rising oil price on Saturday. State Transport Minister Firhad Hakim said the Centre has imposed heavy tax on petroleum products, which is causing a lot of problems to the common people. He claimed that the prices of petroproducts were uncontrolled, allowing oil companies to raise prices to increase their profits so that their share prices also go up. In return, this will help the Centre sell to state-run oil companies to foreign investors.

Attacking the Centre, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Chaudhary said his party is demanding withdrawal of taxes to reduce the prices of petroleum products to reduce the burden on the people. He said the West Bengal government should also consider reduction in tax on petroleum products, saying CM Mamata Banerjee came to power with a big mandate and should review it.
