New Delhi: The bill to ban instant Triple Talaq is likely to be taken up for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha today. The draft triple talaq bill was introduced by the Modi government on the first day of the first session of the Lok Sabha after assuming power for the second consecutive time in May. The Lok Sabha is likely to pass three divorce bills after discussing it today.
The BJP has issued a three-line whip to its MPs to ensure their presence in the House. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made several commitments on the triple talaq bill. After the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha in June, the last bill was nullified as it could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha.
It may be mentioned that in the event of the passage of a Bill in the Lok Sabha and the failure of the Rajya Sabha to pass it, the Bill becomes ineffective if the Lok Sabha is dissolved. The Modi government had twice issued an ordinance on triple talaq in September 2018 and February 2019. This is because the controversial bill was pending in the Rajya Sabha after the passage of the controversial bill in the Lok Sabha.
