The company TSMC, the world's largest chipmaker, has announced the adoption of second-generation 7-nm technology and the start of mass production of chips made on the new technological process. The Taiwanese vendor also announced the timing of the transition of the production line to 5-nanometer solutions for processors of future mobile devices.

According to the TSMC “roadmap”, the company has already embarked on a risky production of 5-nm chips using extreme UV light lithography technology (EUV). The beginning of the mass gathering of new products from the conveyor is scheduled for the first quarter of 2020, and the appearance of the first commercial devices with processors built on a 5-nanometer process is expected in June of the same year.

Currently, TSMC production facilities have begun large-scale production of second-generation 7-nm chips manufactured using EUV, and one of the research plants is starting preparations for the development of the 3-nm process technology. In addition to the current plans, there is a transition 6-nm process for mobile platforms, 5G equipment, graphics processors and computing systems.

Earlier, the company said it would continue to supply Kirin mobile processors for Huawei, despite the Chinese vendor being added to the US blacklist list.
