New Delhi: Twitter has been embroiled in controversy and amid its deteriorating ties with the Indian government over new IT rules. This is the first such ban on the account of a Union Minister. The minister criticised the US social networking company's decision, terming it as arbitrary behaviour and gross violation of IT rules. He also informed that the microblogging site has violated the new IT rules requiring the user to give notice before blocking users' access to the account.

The same tweet about which the IT Minister's account was closed had a song from AR Rahman playing in the background. The Union Minister had posted a video in a post in 2017 paying homage to the Indian Army on the occasion of the anniversary of the victory of the 1971 war. The song playing in the background in the video was AR Rahman's 'Maa Tujhe Salaam'. The tweet was reportedly considered a violation of copyright rules. The song belongs to Sony Music and is also copyrighted by the company. According to media reports, twitter was served a notice DMCA by Sony Music. Sony asked Twitter to delete the tweet as it contained his song. After which the Union Minister's account was closed for an hour and the tweet was also deleted.

Though Twitter later reported that it lifted the ban on Ravi Shankar Prasad's account, it withheld the tweet that was banned. After about an hour, the ban on the account was lifted, but it was warned that the account could be closed or suspended again in case of any notice against it. Taking a dig at Twitter, Prasad wrote on another social media platform Ku that his comments on Twitter's "autocratic and arbitrary actions" clearly showed the annoyance of the microblogging portal.
