New Delhi: In most banks across the country, employees belonging to two unions will be on strike today. Additionally, banks will remain closed for four consecutive days due to the Diwali holidays. The strike is expected to negatively impact banking services. It is a matter of some relief that SBI has said that their strike will not be affected here. This announcement by the employee organizations is likely to affect the banking functioning in the festive season. In such a situation people may face problems.

The strike has been called by the All India Bank Supply Union (AIBEA) and the Bank Supply Federation of India. The strike will be to protest the proposed merger of banks and falling interest rates on deposits. However, the State Bank of India (SBI) has issued a statement saying that they will not see the impact of this strike. The impact of this strike will be seen in all public sector banks like Bank of Baroda, Bank of Maharashtra and Syndicate Bank, as these two unions have more employees in these banks.

Seven unions of banks will not participate in this strike. Three of these seven organizations are employees and four are officers' organizations. The strike was last announced by bank employees on 26 and 27 September, but then it was withdrawn. The Finance Secretary was met by representatives of the organization of other bank employees, including officials of the All India Bank Officers Confederation. In this meeting, several important points were discussed including the process of merger of banks, wage revision. Banks will remain closed for four days on Diwali after the strike. Saturday is the fourth Saturday of the month on 26 October. Banks remain closed on Sundays. After this, banks may remain closed in many states even during the day of Govardhan Puja on Monday 28 October and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 29 October.
