New Delhi: Two youths died of suffocation after they fell into a sewer while cleaning an apartment in Mundka, police said on Sunday. After getting information about the incident, the police reached the spot and sent the body to the mortuary of Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem. The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Ashok Kumar, a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana, and Rohit, 32, a resident of Bakkarwala JJ Colony.

According to the information, Rohit used to work as a cleaner in the colony, while Ashok was a guard. According to Mundka police, they received information about two persons fainting while cleaning a sewer in Loknayaka Puram Colony on Friday evening. As soon as the information was received, the police and fire brigade personnel immediately reached the spot. Firefighters, after widening the main hall, pulled the duo out of the sewer in an unconscious state and rushed them to a hospital where doctors declared them brought dead. According to locals, Loknayaka Puram Colony has been settled by DDA. There was a sewer problem in the colony.

This information was being given to DDA officials. On Friday, some people arrived for sewer cleaning. He asked Rohit, who works here, to get into the sewer. After which Rohit got into the sewer without any safety equipment. When there was no movement from inside for some time, people feared something untoward. Ashok then got into the sewer to see Rohit and he too fell unconscious, the police officer said. The matter was then reported to the police. Police and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot. Firefighters pulled out both of them. Both the deceased lived in the same area. However, this development raises the question that when science has progressed so much today, why are machines not used to clean sewers, and how long will the workers continue to die like this?
