Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has forged ahead with plans to establish a significant trade corridor connecting India to Europe via the Middle East, despite ongoing conflicts in the region due to the Israel-Hamas war.

During his meeting with United Arab Emirates (UAE) leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi, Modi reaffirmed the commitment to develop the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), despite concerns surrounding the Red Sea conflict. India's Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra confirmed that both leaders have agreed to initiate steps to activate a segment of the ambitious corridor.

While acknowledging the regional conflicts, Kwatra emphasized the importance of sustaining economic cooperation and momentum in the face of adversities. The IMEC project, endorsed by the US and its allies, aims to establish an efficient ship-to-rail network connecting India, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel. Apart from enhancing trade, the initiative is viewed as a strategic response to China's growing influence in the region.

Modi's visit  alsoresulted in agreements on a bilateral investment treaty and collaboration in electricity and digital infrastructure development, as stated by India's Ministry of External Affairs.

Addressing the Indian community in the UAE, Modi highlighted the strong bilateral ties, referring to Sheikh Mohammed as his brother. He is scheduled to inaugurate the UAE's first Hindu temple during his visit. Modi emphasized the need for reform in global governance institutions. He stressed the importance of amplifying the voices of the developing world and ensuring their participation in global decision-making processes. Modi underscored the necessity of addressing the priorities of the Global South and extending assistance to needy nations. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of developing global frameworks to tackle emerging challenges such as artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and cybercrime. Modi emphasized the significance of upholding national sovereignty while respecting international law.

Modi underscored the critical significance of inclusive and corruption-free governance in today's world. He emphasized that leadership characterized by inclusivity and a commitment to eradicating corruption is essential for addressing the challenges of our times. Modi stressed the need for governance models that prioritize the participation of all segments of society and ensure transparency and integrity in decision-making processes. By promoting inclusive and corruption-free governance, Modi indicated a pathway towards fostering trust, accountability, and sustainable development in the contemporary global landscape.

Following his UAE trip, Modi is set to visit Qatar, where he is expected to meet with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. This visit follows Qatar's release of eight former Indian navy personnel who were facing death sentences on spying charges, a move in which Modi was personally involved, said India's foreign secretary.
