Mumbai: The Supreme Court has quashed the Maratha reservation in a major setback to the state government. Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has demanded Prime Minister Modi to intervene in the entire matter after the court quashed his verdict. At the same time, he has termed the apex court's decision as unfortunate.

Uddhav Thackeray said, "It is unfortunate that the apex court quashes the law to provide reservation to the Maratha community in Maharashtra. We passed it unanimously for the self-respect of the Maratha community. Now the Supreme Court said that Maharashtra cannot make such a law. Now only PM Modi and the President can do something." CM Thackeray said, "We urge PM Modi to intervene in the matter and give reservation to the law-made Maratha. Sambhaji Raje is seeking an appointment on Maratha's reservation. Why hasn't he made an appointment yet?" Uddhav further said that he will continue to fight for justice for the Maratha community until he gets it.

The apex court on Wednesday struck down the state law on admission to educational institutions in Maharashtra and reservation for government jobs Maratha community as "unconstitutional." The court said there is no extraordinary situation for violation of the 50 percent reservation limit prescribed under the Mandal verdict in 1992.
