Kyiv: A total of 13 cruise missiles fired by Russian forces overnight at an airfield in Ukraine's west, Ukraine claimed Friday, were all shot down.

"On June 23, thirteen cruise missiles fired by the occupiers were destroyed... This time, a military airfield in the Khmelnytskyi region was the target of the attack, according to a statement on social media from the Ukrainian air force.

Over the winter, Russia launched waves of aerial assaults using cruise missiles and attack drones, leading Kiev to request assistance from its Western allies in fortifying its air defence systems.

According to a statement from the air force, "the launches were conducted around midnight from the Caspian Sea by four Tu-95MS bombers."

Oleksandr Symchyshyn, the mayor of Khmelnytskyi, reported explosions in the pre-war population of around 275,000 town while praising Ukrainian air defence systems.
A Russian reconnaissance drone was downed overnight, according to Ukraine.
