UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called on Pakistan to conduct a thorough investigation into the recent terrorist attacks in Balochistan and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
During a press briefing in New York on Tuesday, Guterres' spokesperson emphasized that the UN leader "strongly condemns" the attacks that occurred in Balochistan on August 26, which resulted in significant casualties.
"The Secretary-General stresses that attacks targeting civilians are unacceptable," the spokesperson stated, adding that Guterres "extends his deepest condolences" to the families of the victims.
The attacks, which took place early Monday, were carried out by militants linked to a banned organization and targeted both security personnel and civilians, particularly those from Punjab.
On April 26, 2024, both the United Nations and the United States reaffirmed their designation of this group as a terrorist organization. The group is also recognized as a terrorist organization by Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
The U.S. Department of State initially designated the group as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) under Executive Order 13224 in 2019.
The European Union has also classified the group as a terrorist organization, imposing measures such as freezing funds and financial assets associated with it, as well as promoting police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters.
Furthermore, no financial resources can be made available to this group, either directly or indirectly.
All UN member states are required to cooperate with investigations into terrorist activities carried out by militants associated with this organization.
