KHARTOUM : The UN Secretary-Special General's Representative for Sudan, Volker Perthes, has expressed concern over the country's continuous political turmoil and civilian casualties in street protests.
According to the Xinhua repeorts, the ambassador "remains concerned by the current political instability, which threatens further derailing gains made since the December revolution." "The number of citizens killed and maimed in the context of the continuing protests" concerns him, he said.
Perthes encouraged security personnel to follow international law and strictly defend protestors' rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, stating that perpetrators of violence must be brought to account.
The UN ambassador also expressed regret over Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's resignation on Sunday. The envoy, on the other hand, expressed respect for Hamdok's decision and praised the successes made under his leadership during the transitional period's first phase.
Following Hamdok's resignation, Chairman of Sudan's Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan emphasised the importance of forming an independent government with the consent of all Sudanese people.
