New Delhi: Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister, has urged Chief Ministers of all states to erect barriers along expressways and national highways to prevent stray animals from entering the roads. He emphasized the need to enforce regulations strictly to manage the movement of animals on highways, which contributes significantly to road accidents and fatalities.

The Minister of Road Transport and Highways highlighted that the central government has initiated various projects aimed at developing road infrastructure in the country while simultaneously addressing the issue of accidents caused by animals straying onto highways. Recently, Mr. Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha that the government plans to introduce innovative "Bahu Balli" fences constructed from bamboo along expressways and national highways. A pilot project for this type of fencing is slated for Chhattisgarh, with extensive testing and approvals already completed.

Gadkari emphasized the environmentally friendly nature of this bamboo-based fencing solution, highlighting its eco-friendliness and efficiency. The introduction of axis-control roads is also underway to deter animals from entering highways. Earlier, in a significant development for the bamboo sector and India as a whole, a 200-meter-long bamboo crash barrier was installed on a highway connecting Maharashtra's Chandrapur and Yavatmal districts in March. This achievement was lauded by Gadkari as a commendable alternative to steel barriers, addressing both safety concerns and environmental considerations. The overarching goal of these efforts is to create sustainable highways and minimize harm to both wildlife and cattle, according to the minister.
