Suertes Island was formed by an underwater volcanic eruption. The molten lava accumulated and emerged as a mound, and on November 14, 1963, the island was officially formed. According to Norwegian mythology, the island was named after Surtur, the god of fire. When the island was built, a team of three French journalists dared to step on its soil, but they left shortly after. After his departure, there was a terrible explosion on the island.
