ADGP-Prisons Varinder Kumar has taken suspension action on Gurnam Lal on the orders of Jail Minister Harjot Bains due to lemon scam in jail.

Actually, the jail superintendent had shown the purchase of 50 kg lemon ration in the ration purchase, at that time the price of lemon in the market was more than Rs 200 per kg. However, even the inmates of the jail did not get these lemons. Its pole was exposed when the panel reached the jail to investigate. At that time, the prisoners said together that they had not even got lemons. The jailer had shown the purchase of lemons between April 15 and 30, during which the prices of lemons were skyrocketing across the country. Many irregularities including embezzlement and mismanagement have also been exposed during the investigation in this case. Even information about embezzlement in flour has come to the fore.

ADGP, Jail Police Virendra Kumar has said that, 'The jail superintendent has been suspended for alleged irregularities in providing proper food to the prisoners. The irregularities were probed by a team headed by the DIG, which found that the inmates of Kapurthala Jail were not being given proper diet as per the prescribed norms. As per the records, lemons were also ordered for the prisoners, but they were not found.
