New Delhi:- Leading child charities are urging Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to crack down on AI-generated child sexual abuse imagery as the UK hosts its first global AI safety summit this fall. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) is removing abusive content from the internet, saying AI images are on the rise.

Last month, the IMF began recording AI images for the first time. Discover predators around the world sharing galleries of partially photorealistic images.

IWF executive director Susie Hargreaves said: "While such images are not currently being found in large numbers, criminals may create an unprecedented amount of lifelike child sexual abuse images. I know something," he said. The BBC aired edited versions of some images showing girls as young as five in nude sexual positions.

The IWF is one of only three charities in the world authorized to actively search for child abuse content online.  The company began recording AI imagery on May 24, and as of June 30, analysts surveyed 29 websites and found seven shared galleries of AI imagery. announced.

The charity did not confirm the exact number of images, but said dozens of AI images were mixed with actual abuse material shared on illegal sites. Some of these have been classified by experts as Category A images, the most recognizable images depicting an intrusion.

Creating child sexual abuse images is illegal in almost every country. “We now have an opportunity to get ahead of this new technology, but the law needs to take that into account and make it fit for purpose in the face of this new threat,” Hargreaves said.

In June, Sunak announced plans to host the world's first global summit on AI security in the UK. The government has promised to bring together experts and lawmakers to study the risks of AI and discuss how internationally coordinated measures can mitigate the risks.

As part of their work, IMF analysts track trends in abuse imagery, including the recent rise in so-called "homemade" abuse content, in which children are coerced to send videos and photos of themselves to abusers. The charity is concerned that AI-generated images are on the rise, although the number of images found is still a fraction of other forms of abusive content.

In 2022, the IWF documented over 250,000 websites containing child sexual abuse images and attempted to take them offline. Analysts also recorded conversations on forums between predators that offered tips on how to create the most realistic images of children possible.

They found guidance on how to trick AI into drawing images of abuse and how to download open source AI models to remove security barriers.

While most AI image generators have strict rules built in to prevent users from creating content with banned words and phrases, open source tools are free to download and personalize to your liking. You can customize it accordingly. The most common source is stable diffusion. The code was published online in August 2022 by a team of German AI scientists.

The BBC spoke to her AI image maker, who uses a special version of Stable Diffusion to create sexual images of her teenage girls. The Japanese argued that his "cute" photos were legitimate, stating that "it was the first time in history that a child could be photographed without exploiting his biological child."

However, experts believe that these images can cause serious damage.“There is no doubt in my mind that AI-generated images will amplify these preferences, amplify these differences, and pose great harm and risk to children around the world,” he said. Professor Björn Ommer, one of Stable Diffusion's main developers, defended the decision to release Stable Diffusion as open source. He told the BBC that since then hundreds of academic research projects have been spawned, including many thriving businesses. Professor Omar believes this justifies his and his team's decision, stressing that it is not right to stop research and development.

“We really have to face the fact that this is a global, global development. We cannot stop the global development of this technology, we have to find ways to improve it to take this into account,” he said. Stability AI, which funded the development of the model before its launch, is one of the most prominent companies developing new versions of Stable Diffusion. The company declined to be interviewed, but has previously said it prohibits the misuse of its version of AI for illegal or immoral purposes.
