Ballia: Police have arrested seven people in connection with the hostage-taking of polling officials during panchayat elections in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. The arrest took place on Tuesday. Police have also registered a case against 15 unidentified persons. BJP MLA Surendra Singh created a ruckus at the police station to protest against the arrest.

Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjay Yadav said villagers opposed bogus voting and took some polling officials, hostage, during the third phase of panchayat elections on Monday. However, the returning officer was later released when police reached the spot. Seven people have been arrested in this case. Bjp MLA Surendra Singh of Baria rushed to Dokati police station following the news of the arrests. According to eyewitnesses, Surendra Singh told the police officers in the police station a terrible lie. Surendra Singh claimed that the police made the arrests "wrongly" and the arrested people were protesting peacefully.

However, MLA Surendra Singh denied that he had "cordoned off" police officers along with his supporters, saying he had spoken to the policemen. Surendra Singh then claimed that the police have released some people who were taken into custody.
