The UOP police have always been in the news for some reason or the other. This includes their good deeds as well as heroic adventures. However, there are times when they seem to be doing a variety of things, making it more in the news. Now, the new incident has come from Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh, where police are stopping civilians for routine vehicle checks and checking them on gunpoint. Even though it may sound quite bizarre, it has been happening in the area for quite some time and some of the video clips here have recently gone viral that lead to the case. A recent video ANI UP tweeted on its Twitter handle showing people being harassed in the name of a police investigation.

In this video recently surfaced, one can watch several clips taken from a different time in Badaun district and at different places. The policemen are seen pointing guns at the passengers and forcing their vehicles to top their hands while checking. According to media reports, a clip in the video was shot at the Bagen police post in Wazirganj and the in-charge of the post, Rahul Kumar Sisodia threatened the passengers. One of these is seen in Hindi with the following statement – "Lift your hands, spread legs, if your hands are carried down then will be shot. Then don't say you were shot. Who will put up a helmet? will be shot."

In this case, regular people living in and around the city claim that such an investigation by the police has been a routine for some time. According to one of the passengers, police officers did not allow female passengers to pass without this 'gunpoint-check'. Raj Kumar Agarwal, a businessman, told news agency IANS, "If you are driving and the police want to stop you, they will come to you with a gun in hand. Such a rule is very intimidating and abusive to the common man. Even if a female driver is there, the police do not make any concessions." Talking about the second edition of the story, police officers were told that the gun pointing at passengers was being used to monitor crime in the area. A police officer said, "The Badaun is a crime-prone area and we keep our guns out because you never know which vehicle is bringing criminals. We have to be prepared."

For your information, the Office of the Director General of Police (DGP) has informed and questioned the need to initiate an inquiry into the incident and take action if required. You are entitled to use firearms during police force checking activities in vehicles, but only under special circumstances. This should include curfew or any situation that has led to an official warning passed by the administration. What is happening to these passengers is unconstitutional and can also be termed as physical and mental harassment. We hope the administration will come up with a solution and prevent such measures from occurring. so that some discomfort can be avoided.
