LUCKNOW:  In the Kaptanganj area of the Basti district, a group of robbers disassembled an ATM machine with a gas cutter and fled with about Rs 20.52 lakh in cash that was inside.

According to Superintendent of Police Ashish Srivastava, the police were informed of an emergency alarm via a call from the bank's Mumbai headquarters.

The three ATMs of the same bank in the region were immediately searched by SHO Kaptanganj Shashank Shekhar, who found nothing strange.

Later on, though, some commuters in the same vicinity noticed smoke coming from an ATM kiosk beneath a flypast and called the police.

When a police squad arrived at the scene, they discovered that the criminals had cut the front of the ATM machine with a gas cutter before stealing the cash box and other components.

The SP said, "We then alerted the bank officials about the event."

The station house officer said, "The ATM's CCTV camera has been inoperable for weeks. At the time of the theft, the alarm did not even sound. In the home next to the ATM, there is a CCTV camera, but the criminals have painted the lens black.
