In Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district, a woman named Mariam Shareef has accused her husband of issuing her a 'triple talaq' after she praised the development work carried out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Ayodhya.

Mariam, who married Arshad from Ayodhya in December of the previous year, claimed that her husband was infuriated by her positive comments about the government's progress in Ayodhya. Following her praise, Arshad allegedly sent Mariam back to her parents’ home, and then divorced her. In a disturbing turn of events, he reportedly threw a pan of hot lentils at her.

Mariam shared that she was impressed by the improvements in Ayodhya during her visit with her husband and expressed her admiration for the work done by Modi and Adityanath. Her comments reportedly angered her husband and his family, leading to verbal and physical abuse.

In late July, after being sent back to her parents, Mariam’s relatives intervened, and she was returned to Ayodhya in early August. Despite her efforts to file a police complaint in Bahraich, she claims that no action was taken, and a purported compromise was reached between the couple in the presence of the police.

On August 5, Mariam alleges that Arshad began insulting the Chief Minister and Prime Minister, and then pronounced 'talaq' three times. Her shock was met with further violence, as her mother-in-law and brother-in-law allegedly assaulted her while Arshad tried to strangle her and threw hot lentils at her.

Mariam attempted to report the incident to the police but faced challenges. She later submitted a complaint online through the Integrated Grievance Redressal Services portal and also wrote to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on August 18.

Since the story became public, Mariam reports that her husband’s family has been pressuring her to undergo a nikah halala—a practice where a divorced woman marries another man, who then divorces her, allowing her to remarry her first husband. Despite offers of money from her husband’s relatives, Mariam insists on seeking justice for the abuse she endured.
