The Hargreeves family's surreal heroic exploits are coming to an end. The fourth and final season of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy will be the show's last, according to the show's creator Steve Blackman on Thursday. The announcement comes shortly after the third season of the show ended Stranger Things' summer reign as the top Netflix title in June.

“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago,” Blackman said in a statement to Variety. “But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”

The fourth season's actual episode count has not been made public, but sources have told the site that it will be less than the 10-episode drops of the first three seasons. The fourth season will see the return of the cast members Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Colm Feore. Given the action-packed season three finale of the show, the futures of the characters portrayed by Adam Godley, Genesis Rodriguez, and Britne Oldford are less certain.

The 2019 film The Umbrella Academy, which is based on the graphic books by Gerard Way, tells the story of a superpowered family of adopted siblings who are always called upon to save humanity. The third season of the show included Page's transition into real life by reintroducing his character as Viktor and concluded with the ragtag group in a fresh timeline where a number of characters have lost their special talents.

Granting insight into what’s in store for the final season, Blackman told Netflix’s Tudum that “the stakes have never been greater” for the Hargreeves. “So the siblings losing their powers isn’t going to be the only oddity in this timeline,” he explained. “There are new enemies who want to see them wiped out of existence, but how do they manage without their powers? Is there even a way to get them back?”
