LUCKNOW: In a first for Uttar Pradesh, a wellness care centre for senior citizens above 65 years will be set up in Lucknow next year.

The urban development department has approved the wellness care , and the centre would be set up by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation.

Amrit Abhijat, principal secretary for urban development, said that for a small price, the centre will provide Senior citizen with club-like amenities such as a card room, yoga and meditation spaces, cuisine, hobby areas, and indoor activities.

The centre will operate only during the day, giving an opportunity to senior citizens to hang out with like-minded people and create a close-knit community. A nominal monthly fee will be charged from members to make the wellness and care home self-sustainable.

"10 municipal corporations, heading smart city projects in Uttar Pradesh and development authorities will have to come together to execute the concept of wellness and care homes for senior citizens, and initially the centre will be known as 'Ullas', he said.

The help of the development authorities is also being sought because the goal was to establish such centres in parks and open areas to provide elderly people with options for both inside and outdoor recreation.

"2% of building work can be done in open spaces and parks like Lohia Park and Janeshwar Mishra Park. The land for the building will need to be donated because the initiative is one that the government supports. NGOs such as Red Cross or volunteers will be roped in to run the centre and engage the community," he added.
