The United States State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, praised India's Lok Sabha elections as the "largest exercise of democracy in the history of the world," during a press briefing on Wednesday (local time). Miller hailed it as an "extraordinary achievement" while emphasizing that the US remains neutral on the election outcomes, leaving the decision to the people of India.
Responding to reports alleging interference from US groups aiming to influence the election against PM Narendra Modi, Miller stated, "I can't speak to the specific reports or what they refer to. When it comes to Indian elections, the US government has consistently celebrated it as the largest exercise of democracy globally."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi secured a third term, supported by coalition partners including the JD(U) led by Nitish Kumar and TDP led by Chandrababu Naidu. The election, spanning seven phases from April 19, culminated in the vote count on June 4, covering 543 Lok Sabha seats.
According to the Election Commission of India, BJP emerged victorious with 240 seats, while Congress saw significant growth with 99 seats. The INDIA bloc exceeded expectations, surpassing 230 seats and posing a robust challenge.
US President Joe Biden extended congratulations to PM Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on their victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on June 5. He emphasized the deepening friendship between India and the US, envisioning a future of shared potential.
In a post on social media platform X, Biden stated, "Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory, and to nearly 650 million voters in this historic election. The friendship between our nations is only growing as we unlock a shared future of unlimited potential."
PM Modi expressed appreciation for Biden's warm felicitations during their phone call on June 5. In a post on X, Modi highlighted their discussion, stating, "Happy to receive a call from my friend President @JoeBiden. Deeply value his warm words of felicitations and his appreciation for Indian democracy."
Both leaders underscored the India-US Comprehensive Global Partnership's commitment to global welfare and highlighted future collaborations for the benefit of humanity.
