Washington: The US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump's attorney Peter Navarro for using personal email for official business. The lawsuit stems from the findings of the January 6 (2021) subcommittee on Capitol Hill mutiny.

According to the lawsuit, Navarro conducted business involving presidential documents using a personal email account; as such, he was required to turn over those emails because they belonged to the National Archives.

The lawsuit added, "Mr. Navarro's wrongful retention of Presidential records violates District of Columbia law, federal common law, and the Presidential Records Act. Mr. Navarro is wrongfully retaining Presidential records that are the property of the United States and which constitute part of the permanent historical record of the prior administration. However, John Irving and John Rowley, Navarro's lawyers, denied concealing information from the authorities.

As explained in our recent letter to the Archives, Mr. Navarro gave instructions to his attorneys to keep all such papers, and he anticipates that the government would act in good faith by following established procedures to grant him access to information. The government instead opted to submit its complaint today," they claimed in a statement provided to Politico.

The complaint, which was filed in federal court in Washington, is latest in a string of high-profile conflicts between the former Trump adviser and the US government, according to a report by the Washington Examiner.

Following his refusal to present any paperwork or show up to testify before the committee on January 6, Navarro was detained and charged with contempt of Congress in June. He entered a not guilty plea to the allegations, and the judge set the trial date for November 17.
