The South Korean Foreign Ministry announced that a  senior US nuclear envoy arrived in South Korea on Monday for talks on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Sung Kim, the US special representative for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), reportedly met Noh Kyu-duk, the South Korean special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, in Seoul.

During the meeting where Washington shared Seoul's concerns over "the DPRK's escalatory measures, Kim was quoted as saying citing sources.  The Unified States and South Korea will continue to work closely to respond "responsibly and forcefully to provocative behaviour in the united framework and beyond," the US envoy said. In response to the DPRK's recent test-firing of a new tactical guided weapon, Noh stated that strong coordination between Seoul and Washington will be vital in navigating the crisis.

The allies must prepare for and guard against all scenarios, according to the South Korean envoy, while keeping the door to dialogue open.

According to the DPRK's official Korean Central Newsagency, supreme leader Kim Jong Un saw the successful test-launch of a new-type tactical guided weapon on Sunday.  The US ambassador is expected to stay in South Korea through Friday, meeting with government officials as well as members of President-elect Yoon Suk-presidential yeol's transition team. President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol is planning to take office on May 10.
