NEW YORK: The No. 8 seed American Jessica Pegula defeated two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets on Monday at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, moving through to the quarterfinals of the women's singles competition.

After winning the first set handily, I was behind 0-2 in the second. In their fourth-round encounter, which was interrupted briefly by rain on Monday, Pegula came back strongly to seize control and went on to win six straight games.

After winning the first set handily, I was behind 0-2 in the second. In their fourth-round encounter, which was interrupted briefly by rain on Monday, Pegula came back strongly to seize control and went on to win six straight games.

The American, 28, won the match 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 13 minutes to go to the US Open quarterfinals for the first time.

Pegula took advantage of her strong returns, winning 27/44 points (61 percent) as opposed to Kvitova's 22/53 points (42 percent). She also committed fewer unforced errors, (13 as opposed to 24 by Kvitova), and triumphed on six of the seven break points that came her way, as opposed to Kvitova, who was only able to do so on two of the six opportunities she was given. Although Kvitova, 32, of the Czech Republic, served five double faults to Pegula's none despite having 18 wins to her American opponent's seven.

Pegula, who had advanced to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, was defeated in Wimbledon's third round. On Sunday, Coco Gauff and Caroline Garcia reached their first US Open quarterfinals.
