US: Democratic politicians in the United States are pressuring Bitcoin mining businesses to reveal how much electricity they consume in order to analyse the impact on neighbouring residents and the environment. Eight members of Congress issued letters to six Bitcoin mining companies in the United States yesterday, requesting information on the energy and environmental impact of their operations.
"Because of the extremely high energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with Bitcoin mining, mining activities raise concerns regarding their effects on the global environment, local ecosystems, and consumer electricity costs," the letters state. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Margaret Hassan (D-NH), and Ed Markey (D-MA) signed the letters (D-MA). Reps. Katie Porter (D-CA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Jared Huffman (D-CA) also signed the petition.
Congressmen questioned the corporations about how much electricity they use, where it originates from, and how they plan to expand in the United States. This comes after the House Electricity & Commerce Committee convened an oversight hearing on bitcoin mining's impact on energy last week. Experts and lawmakers questioned whether cryptocurrency could help promote renewable energy or completely undermine US climate goals throughout the hearing.
