US Tourist Fatally Injured in Boat Crash off Amalfi Coast

Rome: On Italian state TV, an American woman was killed off the Amalfi Coast when the motorboat she and her family were riding in collided with a tourist sailboat.

The collision happened on Thursday off a well-traveled section of southern Italian coastline close to Naples.

The sailboat, which was carrying dozens of Americans and German tourists, some of whom were travelling in celebration of a wedding, was struck by a motorboat that had been rented through a skipper, according to reports in the Italian media.

The motorboat's propeller repeatedly struck the woman after the crash threw her into the water, according to the reports.

The woman was pulled from the water and brought to a dock, according to Italian state television, but by the time an ambulance helicopter arrived, she had passed away.

The crash was being looked into by the Amalfi station of the Italian Coast Guard. A call to its office went unanswered, and an email asking for information—including confirmation of the victim's name and age—received no response.

According to news reports, the deceased woman was the CEO of a New York-based American publishing house. Company representatives stated that they couldn't comment until they had spoken with her family.

The couple's two young children were unharmed, but the victim's husband was hospitalised with a shoulder injury, per the reports.

More than 80 American and German tourists as well as the crew who were on board the sailboat were all unharmed.

Without specifying whether the result indicated alcohol or drug use, Italian news agency ANSA reported that a blood test for the motorboat's skipper returned a positive result. According to ANSA, the Italian skipper, who is around 30 years old, broke his ribs and pelvis.

Prosecutors were in charge of the investigation at the courthouse in the southern port city of Salerno, but there was no response.

In Italy on vacation, according to news reports, the family was. According to Italian media, their motorboat was travelling towards Positano, one of the most well-known towns on the Amalfi coast, when it crashed.
