USCIRF report on Assam NRC, "19 lakh people will not be citizens of any country"

Washington: The US International Religious Freedom Commission (USCIRF) has expressed concern over the National Citizenship Register (NRC) process. USCIRF said on Tuesday that 19 lakh people living in Assam for a long time will not be living anywhere soon. This commission has alleged that their citizenship can be terminated 'without a fair, transparent and well-governed process'.

In a report on NRC's religious freedom implications, the USCIRF said that 19 million people are not on this list. The report expresses concern over how this entire process is being used to target the Muslim community. USCIRF Commissioner Anurima Bhargava said in his testimony before the Congressional Commission on this issue that, 'About 20 lakh people living in Assam for a long time will not be considered citizens of any country soon. Their citizenship can be terminated without any transparent investigation.

Bhargava further said, 'Worse, the Indian political authorities have consistently reiterated their intention to use the NRC process to isolate and drive out Muslims in Assam. Now leaders across India are considering increasing the scope of NRC and imposing different citizenship standards for all Muslims.
