USA: Senior Russian military officials recently discussed the possible timing and use of strategic nuclear weapons in Ukraine, according to unnamed US officials quoted in The New York Times on Wednesday.

According to the Times, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not participate in the discussions, and the decision not to use the weapons of the Russian military, which would significantly aggravate the conflict, was not clarified.

John Kirby, a spokesman for national security at the White House, said he had no comment on the specifics of the report. However, he said any comments regarding Russia's use of nuclear weapons are "deeply concerning" and the United States takes them seriously in a statement sent to Agence France-Presse.

Meanwhile, he claimed that the US has no indication that Russia is preparing for such use.

The United States has been warning Moscow for weeks due to publicly made statements by senior Russian officials that they may use nuclear weapons in Ukraine under certain circumstances, especially if they felt there was a threat to Russian territorial integrity. Used to be.

The most recent threat was issued by former Russian president and top Security Council official Dmitry Medvedev. The Donbass region and Crimea are among the areas Ukraine seeks to reclaim from Russia, and Medvedev said on Tuesday that doing so would pose a "threat to the very existence of our state".
According to Medvedev, this would be "a direct reason" to use nuclear deterrence.

However, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed that the Western media was "deliberately raising the topic of the use of nuclear weapons" early on Wednesday.

He criticized the NYT report as "very irresponsible" and claimed that Moscow "has not the slightest intention of participating in it."
President Joe Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan claimed in September that the United States had warned Russia at a "very high level" about the "disastrous consequences" of the use of nuclear weapons.
