Lucknow: Noida's Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Uttar Pradesh has arrested a member of the Popular Front of India (PFI) Mufti Shehzad from Meerut district. This arrest has been made in connection with the violence in Meerut in December 2019. The violence took place during protests by the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Citizenship Register (NRC). The police is currently interrogating Shahzad.

It is being told that the accused Shehzad is originally from Nekpur Muradnagar under Ghaziabad. In the early days he worked as a cleric. After this, in the year 2019, he opened the office of PFI in Meerut. In its office in Meerut, it used to recruit members for the PFI. Cases were registered against it at Nauchandi police stations in Muradnagar and Meerut of Ghaziabad.

Shahzad is accused of posting inflammatory posts during CAA and NRC protests. Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh has been talking about banning PFI since that time. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya in the Uttar Pradesh government said that the PFI consists mostly of members of the banned organization SIMI.
