According to media reports, the main dispute was over the construction of a temple in Bairam Nagar, a Muslim-dominated village. Not only did Muslims unite in protest against the construction of the temple here, but they also threatened to openly boycott Hindus. In the place where the temple was to be built, there was once a well, where the Shivalinga present was worshipped during the wedding. The Hindus tried to secure the place by surrounding it with bricks, on which there was a ruckus. The ruckus is alleged to have been led by village head Shamsul himself.
