Gorakhpur: A gram panchayat in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh took an absurd decision to impose a monetary penalty of Rs 50,000 to solve the rape case of a minor girl and ordered the accused to hit five slippers. Maharajganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Pradeep Gupta on Tuesday directed the authorities to conduct a medical test on the girl and take her statement after the Gram Panchayat's decision went viral on social media.

According to police information, on June 23, the mother of a girl from the Kothibhar police station area lodged a complaint with the Gram Panchayat alleging that a village boy raped her minor daughter. The panchayat then asked the girl to take Rs 50,000 and compromise after hitting the accused with five slippers in front of the panchayat.

According to police, the family of the girl, dissatisfied with the panchayat's decision, approached Kothibhar police on June 25 and police registered a case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act). Maharajganj Superintendent of Police Pradeep Gupta said, "Further action will be taken by registering a case under relevant sections once the rape is confirmed in the medical test."
