Mathura: Today, where all married women across the country fast for the whole day on the occasion of Karva Chauth and wish their husband a long life, the women of Vijau village of Mathura do not keep this day fast so that their husbands do not fall into danger. Kishori Lal Chaturvedi, a resident of the village, says, "For the last two hundred years this village has been in the grip of a curse and because of this if a woman fasts on the occasion of Karva Chauth, her husband dies." He said that many times there have been mysterious deaths of the husbands of women who keep the fast.

He said that it is a curse of a Brahmin woman who was beaten to death by villagers on the day of Karva Chauth. People here say that a newly married Brahmin couple was passing through Vijau village on the day of Karva Chauth. Meanwhile, some locals accused the Brahmin of stealing their oxen and brutally beat him to death in front of his wife. The Brahmin wife had then cursed the women of the village that now Karva Chauth would cause the death of their husbands. After this, the Brahmin woman jumped on her husband's funeral pyre and became Sati.

Chaturvedi further states that "From that day on, the women of the village do not observe Karva Chauth, but do worship in the Sati temple here. Even before marriage, men also come to this temple and pray. " He told that women do not buy vermilion from the village, they use vermilion only brought from their Mother's place.
