New Delhi: Retired IPS officer Amitabh Thakur has been arrested by Lucknow police on the basis of a report by the SIT that he was prima facie guilty of conspiring to save Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Atul Rai, an accused in a rape case. The alleged rape victim died earlier this week, days after attempting suicide outside the apex court in Delhi. His partner, who is also self-immolated, has also died.

Thakur tried to resist his arrest, but the police tied him up in a police jeep and took him to Hazratganj police station. Hours before his arrest on Friday, the retired IPS official announced that he was forming his own political party. Thakur also said he will contest the assembly elections against CM Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur.

The complainant and his accomplice had set themselves on fire outside the apex court on August 16 by leveling serious allegations against the police and other officials including Thakur, SSP Amit Pathak, and a judge for conspiring against them. The woman had registered a rape case against Atul Rai at the Lanka police station on May 1, 2019.
