HARIDWAR: Uttarakhand authorities have issued a new rule requiring shop owners along the Kanwar Yatra route to display nameplates with their personal details. This move, inspired by a similar directive in neighboring Uttar Pradesh, is aimed at preventing any potential law and order issues during the annual pilgrimage.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami supported the measure, explaining that it addresses past concerns where shop owners have used fake names. "This decision is a step towards greater transparency. If shop owners are operating legitimately, there should be no reason to hide their identities. This is not an effort to target any specific group or individual but to ensure clarity and prevent misleading practices," Dhami stated.

The new requirement was introduced following a meeting on July 12 and will impact vendors who set up stalls in Haridwar for the pilgrimage. During the Kanwar Yatra, devotees purchase pitchers and palanquins to collect and transport water from the Ganga, which is then offered to Lord Shiva at various temples.

The 10-day Kanwar Mela market, held at Pantdeep ground by the Haridwar Municipal Corporation, sees traders from Haridwar, Meerut, Bijnor, and Muzaffarnagar selling yatra-related products. Many of these traders belong to the minority community.
