Today, Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi experienced a minor earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The quake struck at approximately 08:56:40 IST, with its epicentre situated at Latitude 31.00 and Longitude 79.31, at a depth of 5 kilometres.

The NCS shared details of the event via X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Earthquake of Magnitude: 2.6, Date: 07/05/2024, Time: 08:56:40 IST, Latitude: 31.00 N, Longitude: 79.31 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand."

This recent tremor follows a similar event on May 1, when a 3.4 magnitude earthquake shook Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The quake's epicentre was recorded at a depth of 30 kilometres.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of significant damage or casualties following today's earthquake in Uttarkashi. The region, known for its scenic beauty and spiritual significance, often experiences seismic activity due to its location in the seismically active Himalayan region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge residents to remain vigilant and prepared for any further seismic events.
