Varanasi: Those who pollute the Ganges river in PM Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi are now coming to an agreement. After the strict National Green Tribunal (NGT), the municipal corporation is trying to impose a fine of up to Rs 25,000 on those who spread dirt on the Ganges Ghat. The administration believes that by imposing fines, people will pollute the Ganges riverless.

An official of the Municipal Corporation has told that much vigor is being taken to spread pollution in the Ganga river. Laundry at the Ganga Ghat can be fined from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000. Along with this, a fine of Rs 10,000 has been prescribed for immersion of idols, the immersion of pooja materials and Rs 10-20 thousand for excretion of feces and urine. This proposal will be approved in the meeting of the Ganga committee.

Following the directive of the state government, a Ganga committee has been formed under the leadership of the District Officer (DM), about 5 months before which the Municipal Corporation has fixed the slab of penalty by making a bye-law. This exercise took place at the time of former Municipal Commissioner Ashutosh Kumar Dwivedi, but its implementation has now started. Additional Municipal Commissioner Ajay Singh has said that the Municipal Corporation will impose fines on those who pollute the Ganga river as per the directions of the NGT. This will be decided in the meeting of the Ganga Committee.
