Jhalkari Bai was born on 22 November in a poor Koli family in a village in Bundelkhand. Her father's name was Sadova (aka Moolchand Koli) and mother Jamunabai (aka Dhaniya). Lakshmi Bai's companion was a courageous and determined woman from childhood. From childhood, she used to do the work of housekeeping and collecting wood from the forest. Once in the forest, Jhalkari Bai had an encounter with a tiger and killed the animal with her axe. She was a brave woman.
Jhalkari Bai was married to a young man named Puran Koli, a soldier in the Jhansi army. The entire villagers gave full support in the marriage of Jhalkari Bai. After her marriage, she moved with Puran to Jhansi, she was the commander of the Durga Dal, the women's wing of the regular army of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi. She was also the face of Lakshmibai, so she used to fight in disguise as a queen to cheat the enemy.
In the first freedom struggle of the year 1857, Jhalkari Bai showed great understanding, self-respect and nationality when Queen Laxmibai was besieged by the English army. She was caught by the British in her last time while fighting as a queen and the queen also got a chance to escape from the fort. During that war, a spherical shell was also hit and she fell on the ground saying 'Jai Bhavani'. Jhalkari Bai was such a great heroine. The saga of Jhalkari Bai can still be heard in the folklore and folklore of Bundelkhand. A stamp was also issued in 2001 in honor of Jhalkari Bai.
