With all eyes on the rumoured rivalry between the actresses, Florence Pugh and Olivia Wilde had a "Hawkeye" night at the 79th Venice International Film Festival as their movie Don't Worry Darling premiered to a 4-minute standing ovation! (However, The Hollywood Reporter asserts that it lasts seven minutes.) For those who are unaware, Don't Worry Darling has been rife with scandals, including the alleged altercation between Florence and Olivia on set.
Pugh and Wilde kept their distance throughout the Don't Worry Darling premiere at the Venice Film Festival 2022, adding fuel to the "feud" fire. This was true both on the red carpet, where Florence Pugh interacted amicably with everyone except Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles and during the screening of the movie, where Chris Pine and Gemma Chan sat in between the trio. According to Variety, Florence, who was overcome with emotion, turned entirely away from her director and faced and danced with co-star Nick Kroll when the audience gave Don't Worry Darling a 4-minute standing ovation.
According to Variety, if Pugh hadn't started moving for the exit approximately three minutes into the standing ovation (the audience applauded especially during one of the more dramatic passages), the applause might have continued longer. This inspired the rest of the ensemble to do the same, including Wilde at the very end. The two were given the cold shoulder throughout the Venice Film Festival in 2022, which speaks volumes about the rumoured heated tension between the two great women.
Florence Pugh was conspicuously absent from the press conference for Don't Worry, Darling since she had to film the Dune sequel, but Olivia Wilde was asked to "clear the air" about the rumours of a falling out with the Oscar-nominated actress. Besides praising Pugh as "a force," Wilde stated, "As for all the endless tabloid gossip and all the noise out there, the Internet feeds itself. I don't feel the need to contribute; I think it's sufficiently well-nourished."
While all is going on, Don't Worry Darling, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, will be released on September 23.
