Legendary broadcaster, poet, and Sahitya Akademi laureate, Mir Mohammad Farooq Nazki, passed away at a hospital in Katra on Tuesday at the age of 83.

Nazki, known for his significant roles in All India Radio Kashmir and Doordarshan, suffered a heart attack on Monday night, according to family sources. He is survived by two daughters and a son.

In recent years, Nazki's health had been declining, prompting him to relocate to Jammu to live with his son, as per the sources.

In 1995, he was honored with the Sahitya Akademi award in Kashmiri for his poetry collection titled "Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas" (Fire in the Eyelashes).

Additionally, Nazki served as the media advisor to two chief ministers, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. His funeral is scheduled to take place at the Malkha graveyard in Srinagar on Wednesday.

The body is being transported from Jammu to Srinagar, and condolences have poured in from various circles for the veteran journalist.

Former minister Haseeb Drabu, who is also Nazki's son-in-law, expressed his condolences, stating, "The passing away of a qalander is not to be mourned; his fulfilling life is to be celebrated. For he has left this station after enriching it in many ways. A societal loss which is a personal bereavement. RIP Mir Mohammed Farooq Nazki (1940 - 2024)."
