Ahmedabad: Former Gujarat CM and BJP veteran Vijay Rupani is not going to contest the assembly elections. However, he had already informed the party high command that he did not want to contest the assembly elections. However, his supporters are disappointed with his decision. Rupani has also proved to be a fearless leader in Gujarat and is also called a down-to-earth leader.
Rupani had quietly resigned as chief minister on September 11 last year. Rupani, 66, has stepped back from the limelight this time too after the party decided to replace the entire cabinet. After Rupani announced that he would not contest, other senior BJP leaders, including former deputy chief ministers Nitin Patel, Bhupendra Chudasama and Pradeepsinh Jadeja, followed suit and said they too would not contest the upcoming assembly polls.
BJP's Rajkot city unit chief Kamlesh Mirani admitted that he was disappointed. Vijay Rupani is the current MLA from Rajkot. Kamlesh Mirani said that 'Till the time the candidates were not announced for the 4 assembly seats in the city, the party workers were expecting that Rupani would contest the elections. But, now that the party has announced its candidates, all BJP workers will work for them. Our workers worship the lotus (BJP's election symbol), people keep changing.'
