Dublin, Ireland: A wave of violence has rocked the heart of Ireland's capital after a terrifying knife attack targeted young children outside a school, leaving a 5-year-old girl severely wounded and three others hospitalized.

Law enforcement swiftly responded to the escalating turmoil, dispatching more than 400 officers, many in riot gear, to quell the unrest that ensued in Dublin's city center. Authorities attribute the chaos to what they term as "a small group of thugs."

The disturbing incident, described as the worst upheaval in Dublin in recent memory, unfolded as a 5-year-old girl suffered grave injuries in a suspected stabbing on Parnell Square East in north-central Dublin. A woman in her 30s also sustained serious wounds in the attack. Meanwhile, two other children, a 5-year-old boy, and a 6-year-old girl, incurred less severe injuries.

Speculation circulating on social media about the nationality of the assailant, identified by police as a man in his fifties, contributed to the tension that gripped the city following the assault.

Protesters took to the streets brandishing placards bearing the slogan "Irish Lives Matter" while waving Irish flags in an area known for its significant immigrant community.

Ireland has been grappling with a persistent housing crisis, with the government acknowledging a shortage of hundreds of thousands of homes for the populace. The widespread discontent has fueled anti-immigrant sentiments, particularly directed at asylum seekers and refugees, with far-right figures leveraging rallies and social media to promote their narrative that "Ireland is full."

The nation's net migration, within a population of 5.3 million, surged to its second-highest level on record in the 12 months leading up to April. Notably, Ireland has welcomed approximately 100,000 Ukrainian refugees, one of the highest per capita numbers in the European Union, following Russia's invasion.
