New Delhi, India: According to a news release from the Vice President's Secretariat, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said on Monday that historians should be committed to the truth and urged for a "objective re-evaluation of Indian history through fact-based study."

He warned against "selective or incomplete accounts of Indian history," according to a press statement, stressing the need for increased academic rigour in historical research.

He says that presenting historical events from an ideological perspective, as was done during colonial rule, will result in a distorted image. Instead, he pushed historians to strengthen the "scientific writing of history" with the support of specialist organisations such as the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR).

The Vice President was attending the Ministry of Culture's valedictory celebration for the Indian Council of Historical Research's (ICHR) Golden Jubilee year. On the occasion, he also opened an exhibition by the Indian Council for Human Rights (ICHR) titled "India's Freedom Struggle."
