Kolkata: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the West Bengal Congress President, has written a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, seeking her urgent intervention to prevent the intimidation and abduction of elected opposition candidates before the formation of the three-tier Panchayat boards. Chowdhury alleges that in areas where INC candidates have won in the Panchayat polls, they are being threatened with murder and other accusations by individuals linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), pressuring them to switch their allegiance to the party in power.
Highlighting the TMC's alleged intolerance for political opposition, Chowdhury points out the growing trend of the ruling party's activists and leaders seeking more power and control in the state, leading to a monocratic rule. He condemns the practice of compelling elected opposition candidates, sometimes at gunpoint and by implicating them in fabricated cases, to join the ruling party. The letter also mentions an incident in Nabagram where a person was allegedly killed by the police.
Chowdhury questions the civilized nature of conducting elections in West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee's leadership and raises concerns about the safety of the people when the police are allegedly involved in violent actions. As the Trinamool Congress secures an overwhelming majority in the recently held Panchayat polls, the silence of Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Indian National Congress, on this matter has drawn attention.
