Kolkata: The Legislative Assembly of Mamata Banerjee –led West Bengal on Thursday passed a resolution to change the name of the state from West Bengal to 'Bangla'. Now, the proposal will be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh. If the Home Ministry gives its consent to the proposal, the name of the West Bengal will be changed to 'Bangla'. The resolution to change the name of the state was approached in the Legislative Assembly by the ruling Trinamool Congress government of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Worth mention here the resolution calls for changing the name of the state to "Bangla" in all languages. When the West Bengal government had last time sent the proposal, the PM Modi-led Central government had sent it back – that application had asked for the name to be changed to "Bengal" in English, "Bangla" in Bengali and "Bangal" in Hindi.

It is noted that that resolution was passed on August 29, 2016. Taking into deliberation the reservations expressed by the Centre, the Mamata Banerjee-led Cabinet had given its nod a resolution on September 8, 2017 calling for the name of the state to be changed to "Bangla" in all languages.
