Kolkata: Chicken and seasonal fruits will now be served in the mid-day meal in West Bengal. According to a notification, under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Yojana, chicken and seasonal fruits will be given every week for four months in the mid-day meal. The government has sanctioned Rs 372 crore to include chicken and seasonal fruits in the mid-day meal, from January to April.

According to the notification, chicken and seasonal fruits will be given once a week for four months in addition to the existing mid-day meal menu of rice, potato, soybean, and eggs for additional nutrition under PM Poshan. An official of the school department has said that chicken and fruits are unlikely to be included in the meal after April. At present, rice, pulses, vegetables, soybean, and eggs are served to students as part of the mid-day meal in schools.

Let us tell you that before the panchayat elections to be held in Bengal this year, the Mamata Banerjee government of the state has approved Rs 371 crore to include chicken and seasonal fruits in the mid-day meal from January to April. For this reason, the opposition raised questions on this decision of the Mamata Banerjee government, saying that it was a decision taken in view of the panchayat elections in the state.
