Kolkata: 931 cases of corona infection have been registered in West Bengal and 105 people have lost their lives. West Bengal is one of the states with the highest death rate. To deal with the epidemic, the Mamta government has formed several committees, taking the help of experts from different fields. Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee has also been included among the experts to monitor the Coronavirus war in the state.

Let us tell you that Dr. Mukherjee is a Veteran Medical Practitioner, Rheumatologist and Internal Medicine Specialist. He is one of the confidants of CM Mamta Banerjee and is helping the Trinamool government in dealing with the Coronavirus crisis. Dr. Mukherjee is heading a 12-member expert committee governing the health crisis in the state. According to the official note dated 26 March 2020 of the state health department, the committee will advise the government on the treatment protocol, isolation, quarantine, testing and formulate a strategy. Along with this, this committee will also give suggestions for enhancing healthcare infrastructure.

On 6 April this year, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announced the formation of a global team of experts, which will assist the Bengal government in taking policy decisions to deal with the coronavirus crisis. Eight members have been given a place in the Global Advisory Board of the state government under the leadership of Nobel laureate Abhijeet Banerjee. Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee is also a member of this board.

However, there is a reason for which questions are being raised over the inclusion of the 83-year-old doctor. That is about 22 years ago, Dr. Mukherjee's involvement in one of the most notorious cases of medical negligence in India. And that is the case - the death of Anuradha Saha in 1998. In a landmark judgment in 2013, the apex court held Dr. Mukherjee guilty along with two other doctors from Kolkata for the death of Anuradha Saha. Anuradha, 36, was a US-based psychologist. The Supreme Court had ruled to pay Rs 11.5 crore (including interest) to the victim's family as compensation, which was unprecedented in India's medical-legal history.
